Nintendo 3DS Homebrew With The R4 3DS - Hundreds Of Games Available Free For The 3DS

With the release of the nintendo 3ds that most common question I receive is whether or not people will be able to enjoy the homebrew games and applications they have gotten used to on with their r4 ds card or r4i card on their ds and dsi systems.

Why is it so important to gamers to be able to continue to plY these homebrew games and apps on the nintendo 3ds?  The short answer is that there are lots and lots of free games and apps out there for the nintendo ds and dsi, games that you won't find in stores.  And more important than that, all of these games and applications are absolutely free to both download and play and to share with your friends.

Just what is homebrew?  While I have explained this in previous articles I've written on the subject, I'll briefly explain it again here.  And also give you a brief explanation of the r4 3ds card too.

Anyone that has been using computers for some time has surely heard of freeware games.  Freeware or public domain games, as they used to be called in the past, are games that are created by developers in their spare time.  These games and applications are then given away for free to anyone and everyone that wants them.  They expect no payment for the fame or application, and they love being able to give out the games and get the feedback from the users.

Homebrew / freeware games and applications on the nintendo ds and now the nintendo 3ds works the same way.  You can download and play free games, released by the developers free of charge, on your favorite hand held system.  Much like on the PC or Mac, there aren't just a few games, but several thousand free games and apps out there.

Now, unlike the pc or the mac, where the games can be downloaded an installed on the hard drive, the Nintendo 3ds and dsi has no way to store these games.  That's where the r4 ds card and the r4i gold for the 3ds come into play.  These flash cards look just like a regular, ordinary game cartridge.  But they are anything but regular.  They allow you to use micro sd cards on your hand held system, in order to have a place to store these freeware homebrew games, and naturally, it let's you load them to enable you to play them on you 3ds.

With the help of the r4 3ds card, you will be able to download and play any one of the thousands of homebrew games and applications already created for the Nintendo DS and DSi systems.  And in time, as the manufacturers of these 3ds flash cards continue to make their cards more compatible, you'll be able to also have access to homebrew games developed exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS system.  Will these homebrew games be in 3D?  I don't think anyone could answer that question properly.  But the fact is that just as developers took advantage of the DS and DSi systems, and pushed them to the limits of their capabilities, the Nintendo 3DS will also allow developers to explore and create some of the best games, and release them for free to the masses, so long as they have an R4 3DS card to play them.
