Anyone that has been a home computer user for any length of time has probably used, or at least heard of freeware games and applications.  You can download and use freeware software, often replacing or providing an alternate solution to pay for games or applications.  What most don't realize though is that you can enjoy the same freedom of freeware games on your video game system too.  Consoles like the Nintendo 3DS.  All you need in order to get started is a little R4 3DS Card, which will let you load and run any number of homebrew games and applications.

There's a game called Tyran for the Nintendo DS and 3DS systems.  It's a freeware game you'll need an R4 3DS Card to play, one that I just recently ended up trying out - and finishing on my Nintendo 3DS system.  So what is Tyran?  It's a space shoot em up game.  A top down view arcade style shooter that you won't be able to put down once you start playing it.

And when I say it's an arcade style shooter - I mean it.  From the stunning graphics and high paced music that keeps you in the action, and sucks you into the rhythm of the game itself.  Everything we love about Arcade shootem up games is there.  Power ups, shields, enhanced weapons if you destroy all of the enemies and much more.

I tend to write about DS and 3DS homebrew games quite often.  One of the things you'll notice in my other reviews is that a number of games I've written about are works in progress.  They just aren't finished, or completed by the developer.  I always urge my readers to go and grab the game anyway, as these games that are still being worked on will end up, in a good number of cases, to be games that are completed and released as a full version game.  With 3DS homebrew games you almost feel like you are part of the development process.  Party because you get to download and play these games at all the different stages of their development.  You can offer suggestions to most of the developers out there, and often see your suggestions included in the final product.

More than that though is the fact that you get some insight into just what it takes to really make an amazing freeware game.  And a whole new appreciation for the hard work and dedicated of the developers that spend countless hours making a game, only to release it and give it away absolutely free to everyone.  In my mind, these developers deserve the highest of kudos.  They put in the hard work and enable us to enjoy their creations without asking for anything in return.  Not even donations as is often the case on the PC or the MAC.  They seem to make these games simply for the pure joy of creating something unique and original.

I can't help always feeling the urge to send a huge shout out to the people behind this game.  Excellent work guys!  It's the developers like the people behind Tyran that make these games for R4 3DS card owners that make freeware what it is today - a must have addition to your game library, and an absolute pleasure to sit and write about!
