I write quite a bit about ds homebrew and freeware free games and apps for the Nintendo DS system. And for good reason too. There are so many of them out there that someone has to cut through all of the clutter, so that all of us can find out about some of the best homebrew offerings. Every week it seems there are some new free ds games that get released. You need only your Nintendo DS and an R4 DS Card to be able to load and play them.
One of the games that caught my eye this week was a game called Last Survivor V2.0. This is homebrew gaming at its best. In Last Survivor you begin your journey in a monster infested land that has you scrambling to build a shelter and get yourself to safety before the night falls - and even more monsters come out. It's a platform game for the DS, and it's a darn good one too.
The controls are very easy to use. You can use the stylus to pickup objects from the ground to help you build your shelter and use it to attack the monsters as well. The control pad allows you to move your character around the different levels and screens, while the L and R buttons let you switch between items in your inventory. There is also a helpful top menu that gives you quick access to instructions, access to all of the items in your inventory, etc...
The game was designed, created and released by just one person, which is what makes it so special. Similar games on the commercial side would require an entire team to come up with the story board, characters, gameplay and map designs. But homebrew is not about commercializing a game, it's about the abilities and hard work of just a few people who end up releasing amazing free ds games and applications for all of us to enjoy.
The graphics in the game seem a little bit retro in style. I don't mind this at all to be honest. With games like Minecraft going all retro on us, it's easy to see how a game relies more on game play than fancy 3D rendered graphics.
So if you have an R4 DS or an R4 3DS Card, go and download this game from the downloads section at http://www.modchipstore.com You have nothing to lose, the game is free, but I am certain that fans of platform games will love it
