Here's a good one for all of your DS homebrew people out there. I don't think I have ever written about a little gem of an app called ColorsDS. ColorsDS for the R4 DS and R4 3DS cards was developed by just one person. He released it because he was an artist and wanted a way to be able to draw and create his art on the Nintendo DS and DSi system. With the stylus already a part of the console, it was a perfect match for any type of digital art program... and thus ColorsDS was born.
What started out as a hobby project for a coding competition, has turned in to one of the best freeware art programs. The premise is simple. Use your stylus and start your creation. Draw whatever you would like, then choose your color palette and take your black and white sketch to a full color piece of art. There are various sizes f brushes and brush types too. If you want a spray paint look, you can choose the right brush and make some digital graffiti. Your virtual brush and paint can go a long way too. There are entire galleries and websites devoted to the art that has been created using ColorsDS. And I have to say, it is pretty impressive too. From anime to portraits, and everything in between.
Colors DS isn't just on the Nintendo DS, DSi and 3DS thought. It's now made its way over to the iPhone, iPod Touch and even the iPad. Pretty impressive considering this was made just for fun, and for the experience. Why is it so successful? For the very reason that I continue to write about homebrew gaming in general. While we may think that these cool little games or our R4 3DS cards are nothing more than a passing hobby, a lot of the freeware ds games that come out are at par with many of the commercial games that are released, and ColorsDS is a perfect example of that. It's become the best and most popular drawing app on i-devices too!
So grab your r4 3ds or R4i Gold 3DS and download colorsDS so you too can start creating your own piece of art.
